Joined the Facebook Group
The process of studying abroad at the University of Hong Kong is exciting and full of surprises! I've joined the Facebook group of HKU Fall 2017 Exchange students and it has been more helpful than I could imagine. There are nearly 500 members of this group which shows just how big the exchange program is. Since joining the group, I've learned that there are students from over 30 countries attending HKU this upcoming fall semester that joined the group and answered the poll. Considering the fact that there are many other students who aren't on FaceBook and/or didn't answer the poll, this is a mind-boggling example of how diverse the population will be. I'm very excited to experience this mixture of cultures. University Housing Accommodations Another thing I've learned through this group about a week ago is that the university was unable to provide housing accommodations for around 200 exchange students. These students now have to find their own living arrangements to attend HKU. Luckily, I received an email this evening that I'm being offered a double-shared room in the On Hing Building! This is a "University-rented" building which is an off-campus apartment that the University rents and sublets to students. I'm so thankful to have received an HKU-facilitated accommodation even though it wasn't on my list of preferences. This building will be a 12 to 17-minute walk to campus and the price will be 3,300 HK$, which equates to 422.88 US$ per month including utilities and internet.

Mahalo nui loa means thank you very much!
My study abroad experience would not be possible without the generous help of my sponsors: Mr. Graeme Freeman and Mr. Alec Freeman. Thank you, truly, for providing me with the opportunity to study and experience a whole new business perspective in one of the world's major financial centers as a Freeman Scholar! I want to also take a moment to thank the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. This school provides amazing resources and programs that make studying abroad accessible and affordable. I'm very proud to be representing my school. I'll be studying at The University of Hong Kong this fall and I've chosen this school to expose myself to the culture of my ancestors while exploring new business ideas -- especially involving globalization. Hong Kong has one of the highest degrees of trade and investment freedom and I plan to learn more about the benefits and risks of this concept. I look forward to sharing more experiences as my journey rolls into full effect! |
